EU states strike deal on electricity market reform

October 17, 2023 - EU member states reached an agreement to reform its electricity market after months of sparring between France and Germany over state support for nuclear energy, the European Council said Tuesday. The European Union's plans to make the market less vulnerable to volatility were a response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which sent energy prices spiralling for consumers and businesses last year. The reform aims to cut households and businesses' bills with long-term contracts to smooth out the impact of gas price volatility. (…) The deal agreed by EU energy ministers in Luxembourg still needs to be negotiated with European Parliament lawmakers before it becomes law. (…) The plans include measures that would allow the EU to act as one during a crisis. In the event of a lasting surge in energy prices, the council, which represents member states, can declare a union-wide electricity price crisis. Heating and cooling our buildings with green energy. GEO4CIVHIC Summer School welcomes over 50 students
November 14, 2023 - On 28 September 2023, the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe opened its premises in Venice for the GEO4CIVHIC Summer School held under the theme of “heating and cooling our buildings with green energy”. The event brought together students interested in green energy with experts in technology, engineering and geology, in a conversation on the adoption of renewable energy solutions in historic buildings. Nowadays, green energy experts across Europe are focused on researching how to generate new tools and improve existing ones, in order to facilitate the most easy and cost-effective geothermal energy solutions. GEO4CIVHIC (Most Easy, Efficient and Low-Cost Geothermal Systems for Retrofitting Civil and Historical Buildings) is a 6-year lifespan Innovation Action (IA) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The project intends to explore new opportunities for improving the efficiency and installation of geothermal systems in historical and residential buildings.

UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition: Expanding online learning opportunities for Ukrainian learners and teachers
10 November 2023 - Earlier this year, Coursera, which has been providing online learning opportunities for Ukrainian students under the scope of the Global Education Coalition (GEC), announced it will extend its partnership with Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science (MESU). This prolongs the country’s higher education institutions and students to access Coursera for Campus. Since 2022, the online course provider Coursera has worked closely with the MESU to allow students and faculty members across more than 280 Ukrainian universities and higher education institutions to access more than 5,800 courses and 3,500 guided projects. This includes projects from top universities and companies including the University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, Google, and IBM. Some 50,000 Ukrainian learners benefitted already from the initiative, participating in more than 150,000 courses at no-cost. Other contributions by Coalition members supporting the continuity of learning in Ukraine include supplying and distributing devices, training in mental health and psychosocial support, translating content into Ukrainian, and providing scholarships for students to continue their studies online.

In Santiago (Chile), Latin American experts will review the commitments of the International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII)
10 November 2023: the Conference aims not only to reinforce the individual efforts of each country but also to promote a unified and collaborative vision for the future of education for young and adult people in Latin America and the Caribbean. The UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago and the Chilean Ministry of Education announce the holding of the Regional Follow-up Conference to CONFINTEA VII in Latin America. This event will take place on November 14, 2023, in Santiago de Chile, bringing together the main educational actors of the region involved in the promotion of inclusive educational policies for young people and adults. The conference will focus on the proposal of regional support actions in educational policies, aligned with the Marrakech Action Framework (MAF) established at CONFINTEA VII. This framework is a fundamental agreement that defines priority areas to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all ages and contexts. At CONFINTEA VII, held from June 15 to 17, 2022, in Marrakech, UNESCO Member States reaffirmed their commitment to improving governance, quality, and investment in the education of young and adult people, with particular emphasis on inclusion and gender equality. The conference in Santiago seeks to reflect this commitment, highlighting the importance of strengthening the institutional and financial aspects of education for young and adult people in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is expected that the Ministries of Education in the region will progressively show their support for the Action Framework through adequate budgets and the establishment of partnerships to implement flexible educational offerings and effective accreditation mechanisms.

UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning to receive €8 million from France over the next four years
November 10, 2023 - The UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO) is receiving a contribution of 8 million euros in additional funding from France for the period 2024-2027, including support for the Gender at the Centre initiative. The contribution will give the Institute the means to support ministries of education in their reforms and the transformation of education and training systems. France's additional funding will contribute to the implementation of the second phase of the Gender at the Centre initiative (GCI) in 2024, coordinated by IIEP-UNESCO and the United Nations Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI). Launched in 2019 under the impetus of the French presidency of the G7, GCI now offers full support to ministries of education in a partnership-based approach to integrating gender issues into their education and training systems. Through this renewed support, France is also encouraging greater consideration to be given to girls' education and gender equality in and through education, right from the planning stage of public policies and the preparation of budgets by ministries.

UNESCO and Alwaleed Philanthropies launched a joint project in Tanzania to support culture-related vocational education and training
November 9, 2023- On 24 and 25 October 2023, UNESCO launched the joint UNESCO - Alwaleed Philanthropies project Fostering community-based development through culture-related TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) and employment at a two-day event in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania. It also served as a multi-stakeholder meeting to gain state-of-the-art overview of the cultural and arts education landscape in the country and identify some of the needs and opportunities that may be addressed by this joint project between 2023 and 2025, with a view to fostering the impactful, inclusive and sustainable development of the cultural and creative sector of Tanzania through enhanced access to culture-related education and training.The event gathered participants from competent government authorities in fields related to culture and education, both from the national and the regional levels, representatives of UN agencies, regional and national experts, cultural and educational institutions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders such as heritage practitioners and digital creators.

Two-thirds of refugee children in Armenia enrolled in school, efforts must now focus on expanding access to education for all children
October 24, 2023, Geneva/Yerevan - Two-thirds of refugee children in Armenia are enrolled in national school systems, one month after more than 21,000 school-age children fled their homes. Efforts must now focus on increasing access for the remaining 1 in 3 children currently not attending school, UNICEF said today. Children who arrived in Armenia have not had continuous access to quality education in recent years, making an inclusive school system that provides catch-up classes and tailored support critical. UNICEF is providing educational kits including schools-in-a-box and early childhood development kits. So far UNICEF has provided mental health and psychosocial support, and health and nutrition support for up to 10,000 refugee children and their caregivers.

The tech to recycle clothes is only just being invented

CETIA, a company in the southwest of France is finally offering some mechanical solutions to the challenges of recycling clothes. Its research team has invented a machine that uses artificial intelligence to scan garments, identify hard elements like zippers and buttons, and use a laser to cut them out. It has also built a machine that grabs shoes in a large mechanical arm and yanks off the soles(...)

CIRAD supporting the use of bioenergy to help Burkina Faso agri SMEs

Using agrifood waste as an energy source is the challenge being tackled by the BioStar project being conducted by some ten African and European research and development partners. With rooftop solar panels and robust construction, Stella Terra operates independently of fossil fuels and even EV charging infrastructure, and can do so anywhere in the world. UNESCO looks into fostering the Arabic language in education
November 10, 2023- Within the framework of its initiative titled “Fostering Arabic Language in Education and among local communities towards building more inclusive societies”, the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Beirut organized, with the support of the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation, series of regional consultations on fostering the Arabic language in education systems across the Arab region. The initiative, which encompasses activities to develop an action plan, was implemented under the supervision of a Steering Committee of experts, including an Arabic language education expert who facilitated the consultations and ensured good flow of work on the action plan development. The regional virtual consultations gathered an elite group of linguistic specialists, teachers, and language, social science and philosophy experts who focused on practices, models, tools, and practical examples that can be applied in the educational process. Concept papers for each of the topics of discussion were shared with the experts before each meeting, which enabled them to prepare in advance for the discussion, prepare constructive interventions, and made the consultations a rich platform for the exchange of opinions and ideas.

Mercosur without Racism: Brazil will propose a campaign at a meeting of ministers from the bloc

The Ministry of Culture (MinC), in the exercise of Pro Tempore presidency of Mercosul Cultural, will propose the campaign “Mercosul without Racism, with Diversity and Inclusion”, to create common strategies to combat prejudice in the countries that make up the economic bloc. The action will be presented on November 9th, in Belém, Pará, during the meeting of Mercosur Ministers of Culture. The meeting will begin at 9:30 am, in the Oval Room of the Government Palace of the State of Pará. The expectation is that, with approval of the campaign by the participants, the bloc’s ministers and authorities will sign the joint declaration of adherence to the agenda, expressing the commitment of all Mercosur member countries to adopt actions that guarantee the promotion of ethnic-racial equality in their territories, in an intersectoral and continuous manner.

'New cropland cannot come from deforestation': McKinsey raises alarm over growing land use pressure

The world will need to find additional land equivalent to all of Brazil's cropland by 2030 if it is to meet the world's projected demand for food, feed, fuel, and natural capital, according to a new report from consultancy McKinsey that warns urgent reforms to global food systems are required to avoid a fresh wave of global deforestation. The wide-ranging report, titled Striking the balance: catalyzing a sustainable land use transition, calculates that 70 to 80 million hectares of additional cropland if needed by 2030 based on current trends. Japanese researchers develop biosensor for monitoring water quality

US announces $440 million to install solar panels on low-income homes in Puerto Rico

November 3, 2023 - The U.S. Department of Energy announced Thursday that it will disburse $440 million to install solar panels on low-income homes in Puerto Rico as the U.S. territory struggles with ongoing power outages and a crumbling electric grid. (…) The announcement is the newest push to help Puerto Rico lessen its dependence on fossil fuels and a disintegrating electric grid neglected for decades before it was razed by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and battered by Hurricane Fiona last year. November 2023- In a moment of strong media coverage, Yocheved Lifshitz shared his “shalom,” a gesture of peace, in a recently surfaced video of him shaking the hand of a Hamas member during his release. The term “shalom,” translated as “peace,” seems ironic considering the circumstances, but for Yocheved, it was a sign of appreciation for the humanity he experienced during his detention in the Gaza Strip. Yocheved, 85, was thrust into the spotlight at a news conference in Tel Aviv, where she detailed her 17 days as a prisoner in Hamas custody. His story, however, challenges many dominant narratives.

October 30, 2023 - On October 30, USTDA will begin its U.S.-Africa Climate Innovation Week, which will bring African leaders and decision-makers to the United States to explore innovative infrastructure solutions for their climate resilience, adaptation and mitigation priorities. Vice President Kamala Harris announced USTDA's initiative during her March 2023 trip to Africa as an example of the U.S. government's commitment to addressing African nations' pressing needs resulting from the climate crisis. October 18, 2023 - From deals on electric cars to investment in solar panels, there is room for all sides in the global green industrial revolution. Our polarised world is failing to tackle the climate crisis at the required speed. The only way to reverse this catastrophic situation is to get the three largest historical emitters – the US, Europe and China – to join forces, directly or indirectly, to accelerate the global shift to green energy. After months of rising tensions, the possible visit to Washington of the Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, later this month could pave the way for a highly anticipated but still unscheduled summit between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, and kickstart a reset.
